Have That Sun-kissed Glow All Year Round With This Guide and No Sun or Sun Beds Needed!

By  |

What can you do if you love the look of a rich dark tan but you’re trying to be smart about the sun? Do you want that gorgeous sun-kissed looking skin without having to sun bathe? You can use a fake tanning lotion and have a great looking tan anytime. It is perfectly safe, and if you follow a few simple steps for applying it, it will look as natural as the sun itself.

First things first, you must ensure you have enough time to do this else you’ll rush the process and it won’t look as good.

Why use fake tan?

Traditional tanning methods have become less popular these days because of major health risks. Because of this major finding in tanning several companies have provided tanning creams, lotions and spray to get a tanned skin even without the help of tanning beds or the sun. Most people prefer this type of artificial tanning since there is no significant health risk and the only damage a person may get from them is if their skins are too sensitive and the application may cause some allergy.

Among these innovations the one that is gaining the most popularity is the self-tanning spray. This easy to use product is sprayed evenly on the skin and then all you have to do is wait for it to dry. Tanning products contain a chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This chemical acts an agent that triggers the amino acids in the skin to produce a great tan. Tanning products has been recognized by many as safe and effective and does not produce the great risk that traditional and tanning beds have. Applying a tanning spray is pretty easy, but there are some things that you need to know to achieve that perfect even tan. Here are five things that you should remember when you apply one.

Benefits of using fake tan

There are ways to stay tanned without risking your health-yet many people still expose themselves to potentially damaging UV rays to achieve a healthy glow.

  1. No harmful risks – Fake tans do not pose the risks associated from UV rays like sunbathing and tanning beds do and you get the same great-looking tan.
  2. Cost conscious – You can use your own your own tanning kit at home. No need to go on holiday!
  3. Tan only certain areas – Tan only the areas you want, such as your face and arms, making you look healthier and slimmer.
  4. Save time – There is no need to start working on your tan months in advance. Self-tan can be applied a day or so beforehand.
  5. Fake tans are temporary – Most only last five to seven days.
  6. No tan lines – Tan lines are almost unavoidable with sunbathing and tanning beds.

A gorgeous glowing tan, not orange!

Remember the days when tanning lotion turned your skin orange? Well, those days are long gone. The running, streaking goop that used to tint skin has evolved into a natural looking skin tone and colour enhancer today.

Not only has the formula changed when it comes to tanning lotions, but the way they are applied has too. The once running lotions are thicker, come in foams or mousse and are slowly activated and quickly absorbed. These factors alone will give you a more natural looking tan, but there are ways to apply them that will help too.

First of all, think about the way the sun will tan you. It is usually darker on the forearms and lighter underneath. Rarely are your armpits as dark as your shoulders unless you make a habit of sunbathing with your arms over your head. So when you apply tanning lotions, you will apply them darker to the areas that naturally darken. It is a subtle difference because you still want an even tan. The way to gently blend the darkness is to apply the lotion evenly then using a damp towel buff the areas you want slightly lighter.

How to prep your skin

(a) If you have sensitive skin, I would recommend you do a patch test on a small area of skin 24 hours before applying to the entire body. If a reaction develops do not use and find another product.

(b) Exfoliate thoroughly and preferably for 2-3 days prior to the self-tan application. This will give a smoother surface for the fake tan to be applied and will prevent the tan becoming patchy and uneven. It is best that you remove all the dead skin cells in your body so that the spray will be more effective. The reason behind is that tanning sprays usually “stick” to the outer layer of your skin. So if your dead skin cells are still in your body, they will be ones that gets tanned, and your tan will not last long. Aside from this, healthy skin cells are very receptive to the tanning sprays and would hold them longer. Scrub your whole body using a loofah or any other scrub and make sure that you exfoliate your whole body especially the exposed parts.

(c) Moisturise on a daily basis, preferable using a moisturiser that is from the same brand as the self-tanning product. Avoid oil based moisturisers which can prevent absorption of self-tanning products making them patchy and uneven. Try and moisturise a few hours before applying the tanning spray. This softens your skin and it becomes more receptive, therefore making your tan last longer and absorbing it better.

(d) Remove any unwanted hair at least 24 hours before applying the self-tan.

(e) Remove hard skin from heels of feet.

Before you start applying…

(a) Remove all traces of make up with a non-oil based cleanser or make up remover.

(b) Remove jewellery.

(c) Do not wear perfume, deodorant or oil based body lotion. This can make the tan streaky and not take as well.

Application Instructions

Step 1: Exfoliating your body

Exfoliate the entire body using a generous amount of exfoliating product, paying particular attention to elbows, knees, hands, feet and ankles. Once the product has been rubbed thoroughly into the skin it can either be mitted, sponged or rinsed off. Dry the skin thoroughly.

Step 2: Moisturising

Apply moisturising body lotion all over the body, paying particular attention to drier areas including the elbows, knees, ankles, feet and hands. Leave to absorb thoroughly.

Step 3: Fake Tan Application

(a) Wear gloves to protect the hands from staining and use a brush to help blend in.

(b) Apply a small amount of fake tan to the fingertips, and apply to the face in small circular movements. Blend the product over the entire face, as if applying foundation. (c) Apply minimum product around the eyebrows and hair line, to the ears and behind the ears.

(d) Apply the product evenly to the neck and shoulders, again working in small circular movements down towards the arms.

(e) Bend the elbows, and apply minimum product to elbows working down towards the lower arm and apply evenly.

(f) Apply product to breast area if required working down towards the stomach.

Bend knees and sweep only minimum product over knees.

(g) Apply a generous amount of product evenly to upper and lower legs but again using minimum products over the ankle.

(h) Sweep minimal fake tan over the feet, avoiding contact with the nails and soles of the feet as this may cause staining.

(i) Ask someone to help you apply self-tan to your back.

(j) Take off one glove and sweep it across the other hand. Take off the second glove and sweep it over the other hand gently. Avoid getting product on the nail plate and palms of the hands as this causes staining.

Step 4: Allow to dry thoroughly without coming into contact with water

Let the tan develop with these tips…

(a) Wear loose clothing (preferably not white or light coloured) and no footwear if possible. If you do need to wear footwear, wear flip flops

(b) Avoid perspiration by avoiding exercise and heat so the gym, sauna, swimming or any form of exercising is out of the question.

(c) Keep the skin completely dry

(d) Do not apply any other toiletries or beauty products unless you are using mixing a body butter with the tan

(e) If you want an intense shade, do not shower for at least 6-8 hours. Preferably apply before bed and shower in the morning. Some people shower in a few hours so the tan looks more natural.

(f) Wait AT LEAST 15-30 minutes before getting dressed (remember that self-tanner can stain clothes)

After the tan has developed avoid using the following beauty products:

(a) Harsh exfoliating products and facial scrubs. This can rub off the tan

(b) Products that contain AHA’s

(c) Body brushes / loofahs / mitts

Gently pat the skin dry after showering, do not rub. Avoid excessive use of soaps. Avoid waxing, shaving or bleaching. Avoid swimming as this will shorten the life of the tan, and will lighten the colour.

Final reminders

As an option for your hands (which can be particularly tricky to get looking natural) apply self-tanner as you would a moisturiser, but then quickly wipe your palms off on a slightly soapy washcloth. Then take a cotton swab and dip in either cleanser, eye-makeup remover (one that is not greasy so it doesn’t spread or smear), or nail polish remover and carefully use it to wipe around the nails and cuticle area and between your fingers. You can also use a makeup sponge to apply self-tanner to the back of your hands, tops of your feet, temples, and hairline. By holding the sponge deftly between two fingers, you only need to worry about preventing this small area from changing colour.

Wear dark clothing because the spray sometimes discolours them.

Make sure that you have evenly applied the spray, and make necessary adjustments if you find any discolouration. Stand still for about a minute to avoid dripping (have a towel or tissue nearby) and uneven application. It is crucial that you do not move especially your joints since these areas can easily remove the application. Be sure to follow the instructions given in your kit and do not forget to apply a sun screen when you go out. Many people forgot about sun screen whilst wearing fake tan and think that’s it’s built in. Most tanning sprays do contain a sun screen protection formula but it is best to apply it separately to ensure safety.

Also quite an important note… Make sure that you apply the spray in covered areas like the back of your ears to achieve and even colour.

Reapply self-tanner as you feel the need. Generally it will start fading in about three to four days as the surface layers of skin shed but this do depends on your lifestyle and how gentle you are in the shower/bath.

My steps will give you that perfect tan you have been dreaming about. Just be sure to follow these reminders and all you have to do next is to find that perfect clothing that goes with your new tanned look.
